Also, I'm going to be a big sister soon! I'm excited to help out with the babies, but also a little nervous that they will cry and want to play with my toys. Here is Mommy looking like she has a basketball under her dress. Maddy had to give her a ride on the big bike when we went out!

We also found a big rock which I liked to jump off of

This summer, I've been doing a lot of swimming. I especially like jumping off the edge of the pool (is there a pattern here?) and diving for my octopus and crab.

When it's too hot outside, I like to paint with water colors. Here I am with some of my recent work.

January was like spring with 60 degree days. Finally we got our yearly "snowstorm". It started snowing in the morning, and Mommy, Maddy and I went outside to play. There was enough snow on the porch to make a small snowman

Here's the snowman later in the afternoon

I've been lucky enough to play with my friend Leo a lot recently. We like to run around a lot when we're together. I also like to draw, and here I'm trying out some new "gloves"

At the end of January, we went for a bike ride with some friends in the mountains, and celebrated Maddy's birthday. I am practicing for my birthday, as I love birthdays! I liked helping Mommy make the cake, and helping Maddy blow out the candles and open her presents.

...After we got back, I was at the park sliding with Mommy and we had an accident on the slide. ... It hurt A LOT, but the nice doctor fixed it all up with a cast. I got to pick the color, and of course I picked purple - the best color in the world (why would you want any other?). The cast hasn't slowed me down too much, but I have to go back to crawling to get around. I can still climb up on the couch, roll around in the cushions and do everything else like usual. ... I know it's healing though, and I'm going to get the cast off soon.

...I got to dress up in a costume, and then knock on doors, and people gave me candy! I wanted my costume to be a car, so Mommy helped me make the wagon into a car. Then I picked out a costume to wear to school and it was a butterfly with a magic wand. (Editor's note-it was actually supposed to be a fairy, but Eva doesn't know what a fairy is and likes butterflies better, so she said it was a butterfly). I went trick-or-treating with my friend Leo and we both got to ride in the wagon car together. ... Mommy convinced me to save a few in my bag, but it was only because there was only so much instant gratification that one child can have.

After dinner, (turkey burgers & pasta), Eva climbed down from her chair, and found the flyswatter that we had out for the carpenter bees. She was waving it around, and at one point, we started joking that she was swinging it like a baseball bat. She kept swinging it like that, so I decided to pitch a pickle to her, leftover from her plate. The pickle went flying through the air, and her swing was nowhere near hitting it.

...It landed, lonely on the wood of the porch, the pickle juice seeping out, slowly robbing it of its pickle nature.

...She hit it with the flyswatter repeatedly, attempting to flatten it, though each time it bounced back with kosher pickle resiliency. ... Giving up on flattening it, she bent down to pick it up - I thought she was just inspecting it. Well, yes, she did inspect it, then promptly popped it in her mouth before parental intervention was possible. ... From the expressions on our faces, she realized that what she just popped in her mouth wasn't so savory, and she spat it out. It bounced back onto the porch, and came to rest in peace, continuing to ooze out its pickle nature into the wood.

...She decided to stomp on it, to finally rend it's pickle nature from it once and for all. Soon transformed into a ball of greenish mush by her 30 pound bouncing body attached to feet of pickle death, it finally lay there in peace.

Abstract: In early November we visited Wisconsin. Here are some photos from when I got to help Grandma Sharp in the garden.

Body: Grandma's garden was mostly put to bed by November, but she saved some potato digging for me. I didn't know potatoes came from the ground!

Here I am getting the shovel out of the shed

The we dug around in the dirt until we found some potatoes and I got to put them in the pan.

...And my favorite part was when Grandma helped me was the dirt off in a big trough of water. I LOVE playing in the water!

...Later we ran around with Snickers. She likes sticks as much as I do! Here we are taking a rest.

Sometimes I didn't even have to do that they were so anxious to get rid of their candy. My favorite was the neighbor who had lollipops. Whew - I'm worn out and ready to stop driving for awhile! In November I got to meet a bunch of people in California who all thought I was pretty cute - you'd think they were relatives or something (oh, Mom says they WERE relatives...)

...Great Aunt and Uncle, Bojan and Norm, who taught me how to clap

...In December, we went to DC for the weekend to visit my cultural advisors, Jenn and Yuri

...I also discovered there's this thing called Christmas - we celebrated it about 4 or 5 times, so it must be pretty important. We had to spend a lot of time in the car though....

...Christmas #3 - Grandma and Grandpa Peterson, Uncle Mark and Aunt Lynn

...Christmas #4 - Grandma Leslie and Kieth

...On our travels to Wisconsin, it was very cold compared to North Carolina, and the ground was covered with this white stuff that felt really funny - I think it's called snow. Mom and Maddy bundled me up in some really bulky clothing so I could hardly move, but I managed to touch the snow. I wasn't too sure about it though....

Hey everyone!

I've been making lots of new discoveries and gaining skills. Lately I've been exploring the concepts of IN and OUT. I especially like to put MYSELF in things. Here are some examples:

...I have also discovered that climbing is really fun - maybe I'll be a climber and not a kayaker when I grow up?

...In mid-December, at about 9.5 months I finally figured out how to put one foot in front of the other and now I can toddle around after Mommy and Maddy, chase after Sumi and Yoda, and explore every nook and cranny in the house! Currently, I am perfecting my running skills.... I've found that if you keep your mouth open, it helps with the balance -

...That last one is on New Year's Eve- I've got the champagne corks in hand.. (I had some help opening the bottles!)

Here's me with my brand new shoes

Life is moving along at quite a rapid clip it seems and I'm learning things every day. My parents have been kind of lax about taking pictures lately, but they seem to like to take pictures at the dinner table (maybe because I'm a captive audience then and they aren't running after me), Here are some examples

...I also discovered there is another baby in my room! And the funny thing is, whenever I move, she moves. Sometimes there are even two mommies or maddies in my room too. It's kind of a mystery....

...We got out a few weekends the last couple of months. Here I am hiking with Maddy in West Virginia

...I also spend a bunch of time hanging out with Mommy. Here are some pictures I like.

...My latest aquired skills are crawling and standing, but those are better captured on video - stay tuned!

I was also very tall - 90th percentile, so I'm shooting up like a weed! Speaking of weeds, here's a picture of me examining the grass - grasss is really interesting don't you think?

...I like to try to do things myself, even though sometimes the results are not too successful.

...I've also learned how to roll over all the way, and now I can cover a large area by rolling. ... I occasionally take a header still, but there are so many things that I can do with my hands when they're freed up.

...I got to try out the kayak too in the huge eddy at the takeout.

...To get there I sat with Mommy and Daddy in a little seat with lots of other people and we were way above the ground. ... All the grandparents were happy to see me because I'm so cute! I got to meet Grandma and Grandpa Sharp and stay at their new house they are building. We spent a lot of time outside cooking over the firepit because they don't have a kitchen yet.

...Grandma also made some really good cookies, but everyone kept hiding them in this big jar.

...We also visited with my Grandma and Grandpa Peterson for a couple days, but I didn't get any pictures of them this time around.

We travelled 7,000 miles, which means I spent like 100 hours in my car seat!!! Fortunately, my parents stopped lots of times to take breaks and let me check out the trees, and to try to crawl around.

...and that was all just in the first week!

We then headed to Idaho, but I got my first experience with the desert in Southeastern Oregon, along the way:

...And I got to see lots of new places.

...I even got to try out my first hot springs:

...These ones you can get to the perfect temperature by filling up the tub with a mix of hot and cold water!

After spending a wonderful week of camping in Idaho, we had to leave. But on the way back, we got to see lots of friends and family:

...Now I'm working back into a normal routine, though I still like staying up really late, because that's way more fun than going to bed. I'm rolling over from back to stomach, the latter being my preferred sleeping position.

Here we are at a rest stop:

...Last night, we got to New Mexico at about 8 PM. We stopped to make dinner. The wind was the worst I've ever seen. Check out mom's hair in this picture:

...But with all the clouds and wind, there was a beautiful sunset. Usually I only put pictures of me here, but I thought this one is pretty neat:

...So, today we're going to Flagstaff. Fortunately for me, it is a short drive - only about 500 miles! We made such good time the first two days that we're going to take it a bit easy today. Maybe we'll even get to go on a hike!

We stopped at a rest-stop where there was a nice grove of oaks, and some big prairies. Mom fed me there, and it was a very relaxing place to take a break. Next we hit Texas, but fortunately we only have to drive through the panhandle, not the whole state. Otherwise we'd be in Texas for way too long!

...We're having a pretty good road trip. We've been on the road for two days. Yesterday I got pretty cranky about having to sit in my car seat for so long - we got into camp past 11PM, and there were lots of mosquitos there! But, today I'm getting used to the car seat and don't mind so much. Plus, today we got a good head start at 5:30 AM, when I was still fast asleep, so I slept through a lot of today's drive. Tonight we'll probably stay somewhere in TX or hopefully NM.

Here are a few pictures of me at the rest stop in OK:

...I got another cool toy too (it's been a big month, and it's not even my birthday!). ... I get to ride in it while my parents take me where I want to go! Here's me for my first ride in my chariot:

...We got to ride on Bob's big boat (it has a HUGE motor) down the inside waterway, and went to lunch.

...Once we got to lunch, I was ready for a beer. Especially since I had the cool hat on that Bill and Laurel sent!

I have discovered that my hands are good things to suck on and regularly taste my fists, fingers and thumb - especially when I am starting to get hungry.

...Usually if they are looking my way they come right over and pick me up and smile back at me, so it's a good strategy!

...I like to swing in my swing and watch my stars mobile - it has little prisims that shine the sunlight in all directions. ... When we go outside now I've discovered that the trees make nice sillouettes against the sky, and I spend a lot of time looking up at them and around at all the new sites.

...Mom is going to start working 1 day a week, and work back up to half time this summer. If will be sad not to have her around every day, but I'll get to interact with a sitter and some other children during that time.

...Some friends of my parents were getting married in the mountains, so we loaded up our camping van and headed out for the weekend. Our van has a platform in the back for sleeping and there was plenty of space for the 3 of us (Sumi and Yoda slept on the floor). While it was cold outside, it was toasty warm inside and I was snuggled up in my sleeping sacks, so slept like a baby (after all, I AM a baby!) During the day my parents traded off taking care of me while the other one went kayaking or biking with their friends. The wedding party was fun and there were lots of other kids there (6 babies under 1 year old), but I was definately the youngest and smallest.

I like to eat every two hours, sometimes even more often. Though now I am starting to sleep three hours at a time, at night, so mom is really happy about that. But my parents are still kind of sleep deprived, so both of them are walking through life in a bit of a haze. But they keep taking pictures of me and making those big flashes in my eyes that turn things green for a while! I'm starting to smile, and I like to wave my arms around a lot.

...If I want to suck, I will start screaming, until the parents put the pacifier in, which calms me right down! If I loose the pacifier, I have learned to move my head around to look for it. I can hold my head up now, at least for a while.

...I don't sleep that much during the day. I like to be awake and look at the world - there are so many cool things to see, I wouldn't want to miss it.

...A while ago, grandmom put up some pictures on Ofoto that you can check out if you want (you can even order your own copies!).

...If people want, my parents can put them up on Ofoto also.

Here is a movie of me at home, when I at least open my eyes for a minute or two

...The hospital staff were all really nice, but it was kind of tough on mom and dad being there, since there were always lots of people coming in and out to check on us. ... And then I ate a lot in the middle of the night and had some reflux, so I got really fussy. Mom was frustrated, and dad couldn't sleep, so finally they figured out that I needed to be held up right so I could digest my food.

...When I got home, the dogs didn't know what to do. Yoda ran away at first, but now he is starting to get used to me being around.

...Here is the Baby Bjorn carrier that we use to walk around with..... (yes, those are my little arms poking out, so I can hit dad if I am unhappy!)

...Then tonight, grandma Peterson came into town to spend some time with us. ... She didn't waste any time before wanting to hold me. Here she is with me, mom, and the dogs:

...She's going to help out for a while, since mom has discovered that just keeping me fed is a full-time job! I am so lucky to have them all here to help me out!

...Who was a mighty man in the village, and honored of all men;

...As apart by the window she stood, with her hand in her lover's,

...This was the old man's favorite tale, and he loved to repeat it

...Long at her father's door Evangeline stood, with her right hand

...All was silent within; and in vain at the door and the windows

... Thus to the Gaspereau's mouth they hurried; and there on the sea-beach

...Then the old men, as they marched, and the women that stood by the wayside

...More he fain would have said, but his heart was full, and his accents

...Over Evangeline's face at the words of Basil a shade passed.

..."Be of good cheer, my child; it is only to-day he departed.

...But on Evangeline's heart fell his words as in winter the snow-flakes

...But, as he lay in the morning light, his face for a moment

...Before the bath my hair was all matted, but now it is fine and curly. I have a lot of it - everyone who sees me keeps complementing me on it!

...But I don't like to eat as often as the anxious parents and nurses want me to. I like to sleep too, and they keep waking me up every three hours. ... Here is a picture of me with mom, when she is trying to wake me up but I am determined to stay asleep:

...And I like to kick my legs out a lot too, to practice for mountain biking. Pretty soon I'll be keeping up with my parents (and then leaving them in the dust).

...The hospital room is nice and all (and some people want to stay there as long as they can), but I want to get out and see the nice spring days in Chapel Hill, and to meet the dogs.

...But Sumi might be a little bit jealous about all the attention I am getting, because she's kind of a prima donna, and she thinks she should get all the attention. But I am already used to their bark (from when I was inside mommy), so we should get along fine.

...I am happy to have so many friends already within the first day or two of life!

...I've lost a few ounces, but they tell mom and dad that this is normal for the first few days while baby and mom get adjusted to feeding.

That didn't sound fun since mom and dad wanted a natural childbirth if possible. They had tried everything to get me moving, including spicy food, long walks, and even castor oil.

At 8:30, as they sat down to dinner, Mom was ready to give up. But she kept feeling funny in the stomach and couldn't hold her food down.

Then at just past midnight, her water broke, and she started feeling some frequent contractions. ... We got to the hospital just before 2 am, and she was already feeling lots of pain. ... It slowed down the period of contractions, but they became even more intense.

...By 7am, mom was in intense pain and told the nurse-midwife that she couldn't handle it much more. So the midwife checked the dilation, and I was ready to come out!

So after working really really hard to push me out, after less than an hour, my head popped out for my first breath.

Pretty soon I was all cleaned up and ready to embrace the world.

...I'll report back to you as soon as I get a chance to go back on the computer!

We don't often get snow here, so when we do mom likes to take advantage of it. She and maddy went along the trail by the creek and it reminded them of Wisconsin. Good thing for me mom didn't fall down -- she's a good skiier! Yoda and Sumi had fun too. Afterwards we got to warm up in our new hot tub! Now we are waiting for the big ice storm that's on its way. Everyone's work and school is closed down today because people here don't like the ice and snow very much. But we like it!

Maddy forgot to get a picture of us when we were out skiing, but she got this picture of the tracks we left! We hope it snows again soon!
